Who Are We?

Founded by local community leaders in 2003, Global Citizen Events is an annual initiative that promotes the UN Sustainable Development Goals and celebrates the impact Okanagan citizens have in global and local humanitarian efforts. Our mission is to: Entertain, Educate and Inspire to Action. The Sustainable Development Challenge is one of several events that we hold each February. Each year we are partnering with more community organizations to help us reach our city’s youth and provide them with this platform.

What Is The Sustainable Development Challenge?

The Sustainable Development Challenge is a team based, creative project that addresses at least one of the UN’s 17 Global Goals. It is open to all students in the Central Okanagan in grades 8-12. By partnering student teams with a locally based NGO they will create an innovative solution that addresses a problem. Top teams will compete for a $5000 prize to make their project a reality.

“More than a business venture or Dragon’s Den hopeful, more than volunteer hours, more than a social entrepreneur project, more than an essay, dramatic opportunity or social media blitz, the SDC changes lives – especially your own!”

The Purpose Of The SDC

  • To raise awareness of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

  • To give students insight into the plight of people locally and around the world and the local organizations that are making a difference.

  • To provide students the opportunity to be a voice to the broader community on issues that affect us all.

  • To provide opportunity for students to collaborate with community members to develop creative and practical proposals for how issues can be resolved.

  • To continue the journey towards reaching the SDGs; through the knowledge that the prize money will actually implement the winning team’s project.

Our Goal:

Students not only become aware of development issues, but also realize that it is

within their ability as young people to have a significant impact in the lives of our

neighbours here in the Okanagan and in countries around the world.
